About Dental Insurance
There are three types of group dental insurance: HMO, PPO and Fee for
Service.
HMO Dental plans are pre-paid plans. Though an insured person has to pick
his or her dentist from a pre-determined list of providers, HMOs have the
advantage of no waiting period for any dental procedure. Depending on the
plan, there is usually a co-payment for some, or all, dental procedures.
PPO and Fee for Service plans usually have no waiting period for preventative
and basic procedures (such as cleanings and fillings), but a 12-month
waiting period for major dental work with maximum coverage of $1,500 to
$2,000 per year per person. Preventative care is paid at 100%, basic care
at 80% and Major dental at 50%.
